28M-parameter decoder-only transformer implemented from scratch — rotary position embeddings, RMSNorm, SwiGLU, grouped-query attention, an incremental KV-cache, and a byte-level BPE tokenizer with training loop and sampler. Paired with a kNN retrieval memory whose blend weight is gated by next-token entropy, cutting held-out perplexity 3.8% on books excluded from training and placed only in the memory.
